  • Name: Melan-ep1 cell line
  • Organism: Mouse
  • Tissue: Skin
  • Disease: Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome
  • Morphology: Small, oval-fusiform
  • Model: Immortalised non-cancerous cell lines
  • Description: The melan-ep1 and -ep2 cell lines are immortal melanocyte cell lines derived from neonatal Hps1ep/Hps1ep C57BL/6J mice. These cell lines lack ep (pale ear), a subunit of the biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles complex 3 (BLOC-3). BLOC-3 is involved in cargo recycling from melanosomes. Pathogenic variants in the human ortholog of ep, HPS1, cause a form of Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS), HPS type 1. HPS is a group of disorders characterised by hypopigmentation, bleeding tendency and other variable symptoms. These cells are a useful model for HPS and for the study of trafficking of cargoes towards lysosome-related organelles.
