  • Name: Melan-si3 cell line
  • Cancer: N/A
  • Research fields: Tissue-specific biology
  • Organism: Mouse
  • Gender: Unspecified
  • Tissue: Skin
  • Disease: Non-cancer
  • Morphology: Small, oval-fusiform
  • Growth properties: Adherent
  • Model: Immortalised non-cancerous cell lines
  • Crispr: No
  • Conditional: No
  • Description: The melan-si3, -si-4 and -si5 cell lines are immortal melanocytes derived from Sisi/Sisi, Ink4a-Arf -/- C57BL/6J mice. The silver locus (si) encodes Pmel, a pigment-cell specific protein that forms functional amyloid within melanosomes to enable melanin deposition. These melanocytes retain pigmentation, but melanosomes do not contain Pmel fibrils, thus melanosomes are generally circular in shape. These cells may be useful for the study of early melanosome biogenesis.
  • Application: Melanocyte cell biology
  • Biosafety level: BSL1

Handling

  • Growth medium: RPMI + FBS (10%) + TPA (200 nM) + 2ME (100 µM) + phenylthiourea (PTU) (200 µM)
  • Storage conditions: liquid N2
