- Name: Melan-Oa1+/- cell line
- Organism: Mouse
- Tissue: Skin
- Disease: Ocular Albanism
- Morphology: Small, oval-fusiform
- Model: Immortalised non-cancerous cell lines
- Description: The melan-Oa1+/- line is an immortal melanocyte cell line derived from neonatal Oa1+/- 129/Sv mice. These cells are heterozygous for the protein product of the ocular albinism type 1 gene, Oa1, an atypical G-protein coupled receptor found on the membranes of organelles including melanosomes. In humans the most common form of ocular albinism (Ocular albinism type 1) results from the loss of OA1 from retinal pigment epithelial cells, with a variable mild phenotype observed in epidermal melanocytes. The pigmentation and melanosome morphology and distribution of melan-Oa1+/- melanocytes is indistinguishable from that of wildtype cells. These cells are a useful control cell lines for studies on ocular albinism type 1 and for the study of melanosome maturation and movement. A murine melanocyte line that is homozygous for Oa1 (melan-Oa1-/-) is also available from CancerTools.org.
