  • Name: CAMA-1 Cell Line
  • Cancer: Breast cancer
  • Organism: Human
  • Gender: Female
  • Tissue: Breast; Mammary gland
  • Donor: This cell line was established in 1975 from the pleural effusion of a 51-year-old Caucasian female with malignant adenocarcinoma of the breast.
  • Morphology: Epithelial
  • Growth properties: Adherent, patchy
  • Model: Tumourigenic
  • Model description: Tumourigenic in nude mice
  • Products or characteristics of interest: Karyotype: modal number = 80; range = 68 to 83. This is a hypertriploid human cell line with the modal chromosome number of 80 occurring in 44% of a total of 88 cells examined. The rate of polyploid cells was 3.5%. Karyotypes of this cell line were generally uniform and stable. There were 12-13 marker chromosomes per cell, 11 of which were found in all cells, and 7 of which were mostly paired. Among the markers were paired mar(1qter--q21::?::6p11.2--6pter), t(3q::?), and i(16q); single der(12)t(12;?)(q24:?); and 8-9 others. Double minutes occurred in some cells; however, they were present as only one or two copies per cell. Structurally normal N16 was absent and N8 occurred in only a few cells. Paired normal X chromosomes were present in every cell. Isoenzymes: AK-1, 1; ES-D, 1-2; G6PD, B; GLO-I, 1-2; Me-2, 1; PGM1, 1; PGM3, 1
  • Description: CAMA-1 is a luminal-type human breast cancer cell line that displays rounded morphology in adherent tissue culture. These cells are considered Her2-negative and oestrogen-receptor/progesterone-receptor (ER/PR)-positive. They are responsive to oestrogen and sensitive to growth inhibition by tamoxifen. The CAMA-1 cells have an in-frame mutation in the E-cadherin gene, resulting in a truncated, non-functional protein. In addition, they have oncogenic mutations in PTEN and p53 and amplification of the cyclin D1 gene.
  • Application: 3D cell culture
  • Biosafety level: 1
  • Additional notes: The cells form poorly differentiated grade III tumours consistent with breast carcinoma.
