It is expressed only on epithelia and then usually only during processes of tissue remodelling; these include wound healing, chronic inflammation, and cancer. The av?6 inhibiting peptide could not only permit diagnostic imaging, but also to deliver anticancer therapy specifically to tumour cells while sparing local normal tissues.
