- Name: A2EN human epithelial cell line
- Research fields: Tissue-specific biology
- Organism: Human
- Tissue: Cervix
- Model: Immortalised Line
- Description: A2EN is an immortalized epithelial cell line originating from an endocervical tissue explant that can be polarized to exhibit distinct apical and basolateral membrane domains. Polarized A2EN cells maintain phenotypic and functional characteristics of the epithelial endocervix cells including secreting mucus and expressing MUC5B, hormone receptors, anti-microbial peptides (AMPs) and pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. This in vitro model can be used in sexually transmitted infections and topical microbicides research.
