The CYP2 family are part of the microsomal drug metabolising system that is responsible for oxidation of many therapeutic agents as well as steroids, fatty acids and many other endogenous substances. The hepatic CYP4A enzymes are important fatty acid and prostaglandin omega-hydroxylases that are highly inducible by fibric acid hypolipidemic agents and other peroxisome proliferators. In humans, 4A1, 4A2, & 4A3 have been cloned from liver, kidney and testis and have been detected in renal, hepatic & brain microvessels.
