- Description: The melb-a cell line is an immortal melanoblast cell line derived from the skin of neonatal C57BL/6J (black, a/a) mice. These cells express dopachrome tautomerase (also referred to as tyrosinase-related protein 2) but generally do not express tyrosinase. These cells are unpigmented but can be induced to pigmented melanocytes if required (for example, as is the case for the melan-a2 cell line), also available from CancerTools.org. This melanoblast line is useful for developmental studies and, as melanoblasts display mechanisms similar to tumour cells (migration to and invasion of the epidermis) they are a useful tool in studies of melanoma development.
