| Target background: | Keratins are a family of intermediate filament proteins that assemble into filaments by forming heterodimers of two different keratin strands – a type I keratin (keratins 9 to 23) and a type II keratin (keratins 1 to 8). Keratins are expressed in specific tissues, with determined differentiation patterns. They are characteristic of epithelial cells and trichocytes. Keratins 7 and 8 are two closely related type II keratins characteristic of simple epithelia. Keratin 7 is less widespread than keratin 8 and is expressed in sebaceous and sweat glands and some cells of the inner hair root sheath. Keratin 7 is often co-expressed with keratin 19. The LdS68 antibody is useful for studies of epithelial cells and tumour origin. This antibody reacts specifically with a variety of human simple epithelia (e.g. bile ducts, mammary gland, sweat glands, urinary bladder, endocervix, placenta), of the stomach, colon, pancreatic acini, hepatocytes and myoepithelial cells. It does not react with epidermis or non-epithelial tissues. |
