  • Description: Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition characterised by patches of the skin losing their pigment. The patches of skin affected become white and usually have sharp margins. The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown however it is believed to be due to genetic susceptibility that is triggered by an environmental factor such that an autoimmune disease occurs. This results in the destruction of skin pigment cells. Risk factors include a family history of the condition or other autoimmune diseases, such as hyperthyroidism, alopecia areata, and pernicious anemia. Globally about 1% of people are affected by vitiligo. Primary melanocytes isolated from the peri-lesional skin of a patient with vitiligo can be used as a tool for research in combination with those isolated from the non-lesional skin (Cat No:154106).
  • Production details: Autologous skin was taken from patients with vitiligo using a dermatome. Epidermal cell suspension was isolated from the skin sample and seeded in cell culture medium consisting of HAMs F10 supplemented with 10Â?„?žg/ml 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (PMA), 0.1nM isobutyl-methyl-1-xanthine (IBMX), 1% Ultroser G, 2mM glutamine, 100 IU/ml penicillin and 100Â?„?žg/ml streptomycin. Overgrowth of fibroblasts and keratinocytes was prevented by addition of geneticine 1/100 (G418).
