MCM5 is a member of the MCM family of chromatin-binding proteins, which have DNA dependent ATPase motifs in their central domain.

The encoded protein is upregulated in the transition from the G0 to G1/S phase of the cell cycle and may have a role in cell cycle regulation. MCM proteins 2-7 form a family of DNA helicases implicated at the initiation step of DNA synthesis. It has been reported that immunocytochemical assessment of MCM5 expression may be used as a diagnostic tool for cervical cancer and urothelial neoplasia. MCM5 expression may also be applicable in the detection of a number of other cancers including bladder, lung and oesophageal. |
